“An étude composed for a large diameter frame drum, specifically a 55 cm Eckermann Mızhar.It is a piece that explores the sonic possibilities of a single, natural skinned frame drum. The piece can be played on other sizes with synthetic skins, however for optimal sound and expression natural goat or calf skins are highly recommended. This piece utilizes various intricate hand techniques to achieve a variety of sound textures from the drum, including controlling overtone resonance and harmonic frequencies. The performer must be acutely aware of his/her posture, breathing, balance, and tension control to achieve maximum tone and musicality. The Mızharis a type of drum frequently found in Sufi music from the Near East and the Maghreb. This composition, however, places the instrument outside the limitations of its traditional usage. 9 pages.
